How to Share URLs with Query Parameters Safely
Check a link’s destination and remove private tokens before sharing it.
A long URL is not necessarily broken, and a short URL is not necessarily safe. Query parameters can carry filters, searches, tracking identifiers, or private session details.
Understand URL parts
The path identifies a resource, query parameters begin after a question mark, and a fragment after a hash may identify a section. Each part has a different purpose, so avoid deleting punctuation blindly.
Encode values, not the whole URL
Spaces and reserved characters inside a value may need percent-encoding. Encoding the entire URL as one value can turn separators into ordinary characters and break the link.
Inspect before sending
Remove password-reset tokens, private document keys, and session identifiers. Open the final URL in a fresh browser session and confirm that it reaches the intended page.
Before relying on the result, test a small example, keep an original copy when a file or value is transformed, and check the output in the application where you plan to use it. Browse the tools directory for a utility that matches your task, and use the other practical guides for related checks.
