Troubleshooting JSON Errors from APIs
Distinguish invalid JSON syntax from a failed request or mismatched response shape.
When an API response fails to parse, the reported position is often where the parser noticed a problem, not where the mistake began. Start with the actual response rather than guessing.
Inspect status and content type
A server may return an HTML login page or rate-limit message instead of JSON. If the body contains an error page, fix the request or server response before debugging the parser.
Read parser locations as clues
Look just before the reported character for missing commas, unmatched brackets, single quotes, or trailing commas. Formatting helps, but invalid JSON must first be repaired or isolated.
Separate syntax from schema
Valid JSON can still have the wrong shape or field types. Compare the response with API documentation and test a small sample with sensitive values removed.
Before relying on the result, test a small example, keep an original copy when a file or value is transformed, and check the output in the application where you plan to use it. Browse the tools directory for a utility that matches your task, and use the other practical guides for related checks.
