WebP, JPEG, and PNG: Choosing the Right Image Format
Choose an image format based on content, transparency, and destination needs.
A photograph, a transparent logo, and a screenshot with tiny text have different requirements. Pick a format for the image itself rather than converting every file to the same extension.
Photographs and gradients
JPEG is widely supported for photos but uses lossy compression. Keep a high-quality source and export a web copy for the destination.
Transparency and edges
PNG can preserve transparency and crisp pixel edges, though it may be large for photographic content. WebP supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency, but test compatibility with your workflow.
Compare at display size
Export samples and inspect file size, text edges, and gradients at the size people will see. Keep the source so later edits do not start from a compressed copy.
Before relying on the result, test a small example, keep an original copy when a file or value is transformed, and check the output in the application where you plan to use it. Browse the tools directory for a utility that matches your task, and use the other practical guides for related checks.
