Using Browser-Based Tools with Sensitive Information
Ask how a tool processes data before pasting private material into it.
A tool running in a browser is not automatically private, and a server-based tool is not automatically unsafe. The important questions are what data leaves the device and how it is handled.
Assess the information first
A sample paragraph differs from customer records or a contract. Use synthetic or redacted examples when possible and follow your organization’s rules.
Read specific privacy details
Check whether processing happens locally, files are uploaded, or third parties are involved. Do not rely on a broad “secure” label without explanation.
Minimize data exposure
Provide only what the task needs, remove identifiers where possible, and use approved software for regulated or confidential information.
Before relying on the result, test a small example, keep an original copy when a file or value is transformed, and check the output in the application where you plan to use it. Browse the tools directory for a utility that matches your task, and use the other practical guides for related checks.
Editorial note: This guide provides general educational information. Follow the requirements of the software, service, or organization involved when a task has specific rules.
